Mrs. Arati Desai

Librarian cum Documentation Officer

Ms. Arati Desai was appointed in February 1999 as Librarian and Documentation Officer at the Nehru Centre Library.  Before that, she was with the Bombay International School (Mumbai) as Librarian.

She has been actively involved in the details of designing the library as it is today. The beautifully landscaped reading room and the stack spaces currently form the entire structure. Each detail was decided in tandem with the architect’s team before the library was thrown open to the public on November 14, 2013.

In keeping with the needs of the times, Arati has been the brainchild behind preparing various types of digitized information like web directories, subject bibliographies and infopacks and sharing them as reference services with readers or other libraries.

Any public library needs to reach out to the community to be popular. She has never failed to introduce diverse audiences to the comprehensive collections, conducting programmes such as author interactions, book discussions, poetry evenings and other initiatives to popularize reading. She is passionate about connecting people with information and providing them with the resources they need. She has extensive experience in managing library collections, organizing library collections and help the readers in speedy information retrieval.

She says that she loves being a librarian as the job not only increases her own knowledge every day but she also gets to share it with others in more than one way. She says, “The joy of being a knowledge provider is really nonpareil!! It is rightly said, “If your passion is your profession, you are in the right place.”

She is proficient in event planning down to the last detail, interpersonal skills, time management, collection management, team work, global learning and collaboration with technology.

She has conducted training sessions with Muktangan’s teachers and library staff, also guided and helped in establishing and designing renowned libraries. In tandem with the profile of public libraries, she and her team enjoys working to cater to reach out to all members of the community.

She also has been singularly instrumental in most of the Nehru Centre Publications seeing the light of day. Her accomplishments in this field were overseeing the compilation, copy editing, formatting, short-listing publishers, communicating with the editor and contributors on a regular basis till the final publication was received.

She currently edits the monthly newsletter of the Nehru Centre.
